Paintings
For years I painted on ceramic sculpture, so the leap off the sculptural surface to canvas was a very natural one. I started with the Vessel series at the bottom and have explored 4 distinct series that are on going.
The Figure paintings started during the the isolation of the pandemic. It also represents a return to earlier sculptural explorations of figuration. In both I have explored issues stemming from my own experience as a woman and how that has changed through time. This current series is set amidst a suburban backdrop, which is mysterious and somewhat off kilter. Included are figures that have ambiguous relationships to each other and the objects and animals surrounding them. Memories overlap with realities and stories are open to interpretation
The Fragment Paintings are a bridge between the Glass paintings and the Sheltering series. They also represent a return to figuration from the ceramic pieces as subject matter for the paintings. Here I have broken up and repurposed my own work into a new context. They are paintings of sculptures that were painted AND in some cases, painted with paintings of paintings! They also are, like the Glass series, close up and play between realism and abstraction.
The Glass Paintings evolved from the TRANSLUCENT photographs. It occurred to me, early on, that the successful photographs were the ones that had a very painterly quality to them and I always felt that I wanted to use those photographic compositions to make large oil paintings that straddle the line between realism and abstraction.
